Live By The Word

The Man Jesus

As we commemorate the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus this Easter weekend, it will be good to remind ourselves how extraordinary this man Jesus lived to please His father, the God Almighty.  A man whose way of life transformed and still transforming lives, society, nations and the entire world.

If we all can study His life, imbibe his teachings, and practised them, we will see political leaders leading well with the spirits of servant-hood, husbands and wives living peacefully, children being morally sound and growing up with the fear of God and the world will be a better place for us to live.

Jesus is the only human being ever to live a perfect life. Sometimes people think Jesus was given preferential treatment that is why he lived a perfect life. To think that is to deny the humanity of Christ. thereby making God being unfair to us(James 2:9) Jesus is fully God fully man. God gave him the equal chance given to Adam. In fact, in my own opinion Adam had a better chance to succeed than Jesus. Because Adam lived in a perfect world (world void of sin until he committed sin) and environment, unlike Jesus who was born into a sinful world-still never committed sin. No one could accuse him of any sin even when He was being tried in human law court.

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. Hebrews 4:15 (NLT)

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Cor 5:21 (NLT)

When Jesus was on earth, He was a man of like passion like us. If Jesus also lived in the sinful world like ours what then make Him different?  I will mention below few of what I think helped Him to live differently.

JESUS IS FULL OF LOVE : The love Jesus has for the father and mankind motivated him to come to this world and died for the sins of the whole world. No love is greater than this. He left the comfort of heaven to live on earth. He lived by fulfilling the law. The sacrifice made by His death was perfect, once and for all!

But surely because of our weakness, at this time The Messiah has died for the sake of the wicked.  For a man will hardly die for the sake of the wicked, however a man perhaps may dare to die for the sake of the good. Romans 5:6-7(Aramaic Bible)

JESUS WAS HUMBLE: He was selfless, put other people first before himself. He is not self-focused. He was able to die for other people’s sins because of His humility and love. He wanted other mankind to be like Him and enjoy the same thing and position He enjoys with the father.

he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Phil 2:8(NLT)

JESUS WAS OBEDIENT TO GOD : Jesus will not do anything God does not approve. He would not say what God will not say. He is a man that’s always in tune with God in prayers and ready to hear from Him. Sometimes He would rather stay silence for a while before responding to people’s comments. A way of trying to hear the father’s opinion.

I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will. John 5:30 (NLT)

JESUS LIVED A SIMPLE LIFE: Jesus was not ostentatious, extravagant, boastful of possessions (He would rather be boastful of His relationship with God) even though he never lived in abject poverty. He always trusts God to meet His needs not WANTS. Whenever there is need God always supply. His affection was not for the earthly things but for the things that are heavenlies- which is more important. His desire was to live a comfortable life and not to be rich.

So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 1Timothy 6:8-9 (NLT)

JESUS RESISTED THE DEVIL: Jesus knew Satan was the brain behind the fall of the first man Adam. So, He knew for Him to succeed in His mission, He would have to be committed to keeping Satan at bay. And that was exactly what He did. He resisted Satan vehemently at any point of his temptation. Example was when Satan influenced Peter to sweet talk him to change his mind from dying. An event crucial to His mission.

Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Matthew 16:23 (NIV)

JESUS TRUSTED THE FATHER: Let’s not forget that no one has ever died and resurrected before. He put his whole life into God’s hands trusting that God would raise Him up. It is very easy to trust someone when you are still alive, but it would be a different ball game to trust them that they would do what they promised when you are no more.

But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. Acts 2:24 (NIV)

I believe few of those things mentioned above and some others really helped Jesus who was born ordinary person to live an extraordinary life. If we all can believe in Him and live like Him, we will not only make it to heaven but also enjoy our lives here on earth. He has promised those who follow Him to do greater works than Him, but such can only happen if we follow His foot step. May such grace abound over every one of us in Jesus name.
