Live By The Word

Don’t Agree with the World

People of the world have their ways of doing things. The way they talk, dress and behave. Their ideas, beliefs, value systems and method of operation are entirely different. And when a believer wants to act contrary they see him as being weird. The world system belong to the kingdom of darkness ruled by Satan while God rules the kingdom of light; where believers belong.

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,(Col 1:13NIV)

As children of God, we are totally different because we belong to a different kingdom. In our kingdom, we also talk, dress and behave differently. For people of the world, it is normal for them to act in a certain way but see you weird or abnormal when you are different. My work colleages once told me it’s weird not to drink alcohol, smoke and  womanize. They believe you have to do one of those. For the married men among then, that engage in extramarital affairs, I  asked them, “how would you feel if your wives are doing the same?”. Their responses have always been it would be intolerable. Therefore, it is right for them as a man but wrong for their wives. The world strives in unfairness and injustice, but we are not supposed to behave in such a way as Christians.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. ( 1 Jon 2:15 NIV)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world……..(Rom 12:2a)

The biblical concept of the world falls into five categories: the physical world, the human world, the moral world, the temporal world, and the future world.

This includes people nonchalant attitude to God, the God-hostile environment generally, and all sorts of corruption and evil summed up under the general term “the world.”

The world in the Bible majorly means the world system: the norm,  an acceptable way of life and the principles being adopted.

People might call you all sort of names and segregate you for not doing what they do. They might even call you a weird person. I have been called that few times. Knowing that our citizenship is different, we must be bold enough to stand out among them.

Below are few things we must do differently as citizens of Heaven

Don’t say what the world says, but say what is in the Word of God

(Bible)says.  “A friend of the World is enemy of God” James 4:4

It might be normal to talk anyhow in the world, but wrong for a believer.

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29 (NLT)

The world says “I am ill” when they are feeling unwell, the Word of God says I have to say, ” I am healed.”

“No resident of Zion will say, “I am ill”; Isa 33: 24a

The world says ” I am weak “, the Word of God says ” I am strong.”

” Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong”. Joel 3:10

The world says ” cast down”, the Word of God says ” Lifting up “( Job 22:29WEB)

The world says what is fact, but the Word of God tells the truth.

“Nothing can be done against the truth, but only for the truth”. 2 Cor. 13.8

You are not lying when you say what the Word says. You are absolutely telling the truth. The world always suppresses the truth while God always tells the truth. Rom 3:4

The world says truth is relative,  the word of God says truth is absolute in Jesus and in His word.

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.(John 17:17NIV)

The world says some situations are hopeless, the Word of God says no situation is ever hopeless.

“Even a tree has more hope! If it is cut down, it will sprout again and grow new branches. (Job 14:7 NLT)

The world says it is not possible to live holy,  Word of God says it is possible.

….for it is written: “Be holy because I am holy.”( 1Pet 1:16NIV)

The world says there is no creator and creation, Word of God says God is the creator.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Gen 1:1 NIV)

The world says there are different ways to God, the world of God says Jesus is the only way.

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NLT)

The world may say there is no God, the Word of God confirms there is God.

For the director of music. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; no one does well.( Psalm 14:1 NIV)

The world says Jesus was not crucified, the word of God says he was crucified and resurrected.

He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. (1Cor 15:4NLT)

The world says it’s not possible not to lie, the word of God says “my grace is sufficient for you.”

……He has always hated the truth because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.( John 8:44 NLT)

Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. (2Cor 12:9NLT)

The world may delight in professing negative confessions, for you as a child of God it is wrong.

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.(Prov 18: 21NLT)

The world may be impatient to wait for their times thereby resulting in cutting corners, cheating, fraud, dishonesty, etc. Believers are to wait patiently  for God’s time to all their requests.

……he that believeth shall not make haste.(Isa 28:16KJV)

These and much more are our heavenly recommended ways of talking and behaviour

Stay blessed

  1. Thanks for gathering all these scriptures together for us. But you are right. Much more is needed than just to read them and then say “Amen.” as James says, we must not only be hearers of the Word, but also “doers” and doing requires us to break fellowship with the world system and choose to follow the Lord and live as “aliens and strangers.” Thanks!

  2. The word is upside down thinking compared to the world! I like your list, especially: The world says “I am ill” when they are feeling unwell, the Word of God says I have to say, ” I am healed.”

    • You are very correct, the World is upside down.Bible says we cannot say before an angel, it is an error. Angels are ready to carry out our utterances Eccl 5:6. Thanks very much for your comments, God bless.

  3. Hi Richard! I like the detailed way you specified the differences between the Word and the world. The pressure to conform to the world may be great now but it will increase as we are in the last days and persecution for insisting on the Word will grow but we must stand our ground. The Bible promises we shall reign with Christ if we overcome. That will happen if we do not waver. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Thanks Edith, you are very correct. The word of God should be our watchword in this perilous time. God bless

  5. The word and the world are so completely opposite. Sometimes we tend to block that out and try to forget, but then we are reminded that this world is not our home.

  6. Hi Richard,
The world is one of the three enemies that tempt us; the other two being the devil and our flesh. Fortunately Jesus said, “I have overcome the world.” I take this to mean through Him we have victory over the world, including being able to resist worldly influences. Additionally, I think it means those in Christ will avoid judgment when the worldly system, and all those who are part of it, are punished.

  7. Hi Richard – wonderful reminders of how Jesus changes us completely… He meets us where we are, and begins the process of change in us while we reach others for the kingdom. I often remind myself of 1 Cor 9:20-21 so that I might build relationships with not yet believers and allow them a glimpse of the miracle He is doing in me.

  8. Thanks Marissa for your gracious comments. May the grace of God continue to abound over you and ministry.
