Do Not Sit By The Beautiful Gate

It has been widely used in sermons and teachings about the man sitting at the Beautiful Gate but whose life was void of beauty.  Even though on a lighter note, the name of the gate has no spiritual undertone, but a name given to differentiate it from many others. I have no problem in the use of it as a spiritual application. After all the importance of names are very important in the scriptures. Who knows, it might be the main reasons for his choice of this GATE among many others in this Temple. In fact, it appears it was the MAIN GATE and ENTRANCE into it. For him it was a strategic place to position himself to receive donations.

Having said all that, my motivation to write this post is to look into the mindset of this man, which Bible doesn’t tell us his name but only addressed him as a LAME MAN.

Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. Acts 3:2 (NIV)

Why was he seated by THE GATE?

  1. This man’s primary purpose is to beg for money.

  2. He has no intention of entering the temple and have a relationship with his creator. Possibly he has been blaming God and his parents for his predicament. He must have seen God being unfair to have been born that way.

  3. He has no intention to enter the temple to learn about God through the teachings of the scriptures.

  4. He was preoccupied with his daily needs being met.

  5. He is a type of people who would not take responsibility for themselves, but to use other people for their own selfish desires. After all, he’s got to be carried manually by other people without the use of mechanical means available to us today. He was at the mercy of people.

Seek the Kingdom of God

  1. The Lame looked up to flesh (People) for help. He remained longer in his condition because he wasn’t looking to God who can bring permanent solution to him. Forgetting that men are limited in power and resources. But if not for the MERCY of God, he would have remained like that and died that way. We understand it was a daily venture for him to beg until MERCY shows up to help. After all, that day was not the first day PETER and JOHN had been passing through that GATE to the TEMPLE. I PRAY THAT THE MERCY OF GOD SHALL LOCATE SOMEONE READING THIS POST AND BRING HELP YOUR WAY IN JESUS NAME.

  2. The Lame was near where the action is taking place, but doesn’t want to get involved. There are many Christians that are in the Temple, but their minds are actually like the man at the Gate. They attend Church services and meetings for their own selfish gains. It is about what God and Churches can do for them.  But not about using their gifts, skills and talents to help the Church, nor use it to promote the Kingdom of God.  Check yourself and mind, if such is similar to your attitude, it then means you are of no difference to the Lame man by the Beautiful Gate.

The lame man attitude looks like someone who probably has been holding God to ransom or making a deal with God. What do I mean by that?  I said that because his mindset, attitude and behaviour changed immediately he got healed of his lameness.  The scripture says he leaped for joy, walking and praising God  and entered the TEMPLE! YES ENTERED THE TEMPLE AT LAST!! That was what make me think probably he must have been angry with God and with his parents  for him to have been born that way…..HENCE HIS REFUSAL TO ENTER THE TEMPLE.  Here is someone who would not want to appreciate God for anything before. He couldn’t see any tangible things in his life to point to as the goodness of God. But as soon as he got healed…… he became a different person.

The Scripture talks about JOHN THE BAPTIST. A man who during his challenges and persecution, thought God was handicapped to RESCUE him from the PRISON. When he was thrown into prison, he got upset with Jesus for not coming to his rescue.  Many Christians don’t know there could be a PRISON experience before PALACE experience.  We are all going to be perfected through TRIALS and TRIBULATIONS. Exercising our PATIENCE through it will give us the ultimate VICTORY that will DESIRE.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1: 2-4 (ESV)
