The Oxford Dictionary defines Goal as, ‘the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result’. Life is to be lived by setting goals. Every area of our lives should be goal driven. Meaning we must set goals of what we aim to achieve in the areas of spiritual, marriage and family, finances, education, recreation, attitude etc. Otherwise, we will be aiming at nothing thereby achieving little or nothing.
Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, But happy is he who keeps the law. Proverbs 29:18
I also believe to accomplish those goals, we must adopt the art of writing them down. Writing goals down are scriptural. When God wanted to communicate His goals about how the Children of Israel should live, He wrote it down for them. Even when it got broken by Moses, God commanded him to rewrite it.
There are many places in the scriptures to allude that God is interested in us writing our goals down. But the second man I would like to mention is Prophet HABAKKUK. When God was setting goals for him, He asked him to write everything down so that it would be there for him to read and pursue. Habakkuk 2:1-2. If God wanted these prophets (Moses and Habakkuk) to commit His ideas into memory, He wouldn’t have commanded them to write it down.
So what am I saying here?
It is not enough to set goals for yourself and leave it in your mind, but you must as well write it plain in ‘black and white’ somewhere for you to see.
Another important thing about goal setting is, breaking it down to short- term pursuit. For example, for someone whose life ultimate goal is to make heaven, he or she must break the goal down to the daily pursuit because it won’t happen by just folding your arms. The short-term goals could be, spending more time with God in prayer and fellowship, reading the Bible daily, living a godly exemplary life to mention but few. The same principles must be applied to other lifetime goals, you must know what to do to achieve it and live a day without the thought of it. Nothing will happen by just writing them down without having daily accomplishment in those areas.
”Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. ” Psalm 37:4
HOW TO GET INSPIRATIONS FOR YOUR GOALS
Don’t just set goals for the sake of setting one. Allow God to inspire you in the process. Avoid running someone else’s race. Spend time with God in a solitude and He shall tell you what the future holds for you. Also, as you go about fulfilling those goals, continuously ask Him steps to take in achieving them.
I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guardpost. There I will wait to see what the LORD says and how he will answer my complaint. Habakkuk 2:1 (NLT)
