The Dangers of Backsliding

BACKSLIDE
Definition: To slide back; to lapse morally and spiritually in the practice of religion.
Who is a backslider?
The Backslider is one who has gone back in the ways of the world and has lost the zeal and interest they once had for the things of God. Liken to a dog going back to its vomit. It is like dancing moonwalk, the famous Michael Jackson style of dance-backward slide. Someone who once proud of his/her relationship with God, but now don’t want anything serious or nothing to do with Him.

It is not just falling backward, it is also failing to go forward. Our spiritual journey should be forward movement. Failure to move forward spiritually will result to carnally going backward. Noticeable signs could be Prayerless life, self- justification of sinful lifestyle, forsaking the assembly of the brethren, passion for worldly things over the spiritual etc.
It  is not necessarily someone who doesn’t go to church, but may be using Church just to pass time without any commitment. Just enjoy being counted among the numbers. They now see the Church as a place of socialization and business connection.
Anytime we sin, we found ourselves outside God’s will and coverings. That is what makes it dangerous. A true Christian will ask for forgiveness anytime they erred but a backslider will not see any reason to do so. The heart is no more sensitive to sin. It is now seared with a hot iron.
People don’t backslide like a big bang theory. It starts from the heart. Prov. 14:14 . It comes with little little compromises over time. What used to be a blossoming fruitful Christian life has been ruined by the foxes of sin.

Song of Solomon 2:15. Catch all the foxes, those little foxes, before they ruin the vineyard of love, for the grapevines are blossoming!.

However, one of the saddest scenes witness of the Lord was seeing many of His disciples going back and walking no more with Him (Jn 6:66). Yet, even today, many are doing the same.

It is a fearful thing to fall in the hands of God. But is more terrible to fall in the hands of Satan. Why?  Because a backslider was once praying against Satan, through binding and loosing prayers. Now went back to the opposition he or she was once against: Satan will try everything in his power to get a strong hold of such people this time around.

The danger of backsliding is very real and possible. This should serve as a wakeup call for all Christians including the ministers, to be aware of this problem. If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall!! 1 Cor 10:12. We must be on guard and not to be off guard. Only those that endure to the end shall be saved.

Matt 24:13 (KJV) But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

And if in any case, you have backslid and you are reading this piece. The heartbeat of Jesus right now is to have you back. Jesus who can afford to leave ninety nine sheep for one lost sheep. The only way forward is to return to Him. It doesn’t matter how far back you’ve gone, He’ll still welcome you back with joy.

Jer 3:22(AKJ) -Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come to you; for you are the LORD our God.

  1. “People don’t backslide like a big bang theory. It starts from the heart. Prov. 14:14 . It comes with little little compromises over time.” How true my brother. That is why it is imperative that we make spiritual disciplines a priority in our lives. Our prayer should ALWAYS include a cry for God to guard our hearts against compromise. Like a diet or an exercise regimen if we are not committed to our walk with Christ we will inevitably end up veering off the path. These verses have always helped me keep my motives in check, “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.” (Matt 7:22-23). Thank you for this encouraging and heartfelt reminder.

  2. Thank you for your post and excellent admonition: “If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall!! 1 Cor 10:12. We must be on guard and not to be off guard. Only those that endure to the end shall be saved.”
