Preaching the word of God transpired in every generation in the Bible, old and new testament alike. It has always been the core value of God. God has always been and always will be in a business of reconciling people to Himself. Many people and Prophets commissioned to do this in the old testaments. People like, Jonah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Hosea were all called by God to preach and warned their contemporary generations to desist from their wicked ways and embrace salvation through a life of holiness.
Eze 3:17-19″Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman to the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from My mouth, warn them from Me. “When I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. “Yet if you have warned the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered yourself.
We can learn a great lesson from the book of Jonah about this. This first chapter revealed the commissioning of Jonah by God to go to Nineveh and preach. This nation was an ungodly nation, but God still wants them saved. We serve a God that gives everyone opportunity to know him and relate to him. After all, we are all his offspring (Acts 17:29) Jonah indeed said yes to the command, but took a different direction: He has another thing in mind. By so doing takes a step that will deny these nations of their salvation through repentance. Here, Jonah knew the call of God for his life. But it was not a thing of interest to him. Nothing is more fulfilling and satisfying with life than knowing the call of God for our lives.
1 Tim 2:3-4(ESV) This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Many believers are like Jonah. We all have read it in the Bible of the great commission committed to us by our Lord Jesus Christ, but many of us are not doing anything about it. I think many of us are not in the best place to point an accusing finger at Jonah; just as Jesus said we must first, remove the log from our eyes. We still have many nations and people living like Nineveh and we must take responsibility of reaching out to them.
The book of Jonah, chapter one and verses one to five revealed 3 principles we must learn and do. But today I will be talking about the first point.
1 .GOD SPEAKS A WORD
2. GOD GIVES A DIRECTION.
3. GOD GIVES A SERMON
1 . GOD SPEAKS A WORD. Jonah personally heard from God. He knew and understood the call of God for his life: His call was a preacher. We all are unique, individually with the unique divine assignment. However, We all have a common call to preach the Gospel of Jesus to this sinful World and generation. This is known as ‘the great commission‘.
Mark 16:15(ISV)Then he told them, “As you go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to everyone.
Every believer is a Preacher; using every medium and means. We must leave the comfort of the four walls of our Churches and go out there and preach. If you are not preaching as a believer you are not fulfilling the will of God. Evangelism is the heartbeat of God and we must do it with passion. We must all take the advantage of our technological world; social media and use it for the Gospel. I sometimes wonder why some Christians are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, to mention but a few, and never posted any message about God once. The irony is, the children of this world are in their generation wiser.(Luke 16:8) They are using this medium painstakingly to post their agenda.i.e, lewd pictures and videos, ungodly beliefs, political agenda, spread propaganda, crime, etc. Of course, many of us don’t like any of this on our timeline, but, are we not the one that liked their pages or added them as friends in the first place? For us to overcome evil we must be good. And the good thing we must do is to use our timeline to preach our beliefs. By this, they will know what we stand for and before you know it, those unsolicited images and messages will fizzle out from your page. Let’s go out there and preach the Gospel!
2 Tim 4:5(NIV) But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
Let’s use every circle of our influence of every medium to propagate the Gospel. By so doing, we can boldly say, we are doing the will of the father.
