I personal don’t support the doctrine that dissuade people from attending church or belonging to a local church. I think the idea will only cause more harm than good. As far as I am concerned, any believer not belonging to a local church is as good as a fish out of water. It’s just a matter of time; such a person will soon be out of the faith.
Truth be told…..I can understand why some people are disenchanted about attending churches. Some people are developing such attitude because of the ostentatious life styles of some men and women of God. And the widespread of false doctrines being practised and spread about at every quarter. Somehow the church is now becoming the den of thieves and money changers. Many are in the ministry because of money as a result they make the merchandise of people. Whereas the average worshippers are suffering and living in poverty; not being taken care of as the early church did in Apostles days.
And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. Acts 2:44 (NLT)
Nevertheless, that notwithstanding, two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because a handful of churches are doing some things wrong doesn’t make all other churches wrong. We don’t cut our noses to spite our faces. There are many more churches that are worthy of following. God always have His remnants. The Holy Spirit is there to guide every believer to the truth and the right place of worship.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. Romans 8:14(NIV)
LEARNING LESSON FROM JESUS
From young age Jesus Christ was introduced to synagogue by His earthly parents. At one point, he stayed behind in the temple learning and teaching, whilst His parents thought He was following them home. And He never stopped attending temple during His earthly ministry. He would rather correct wrong practices in the temple rather than staying away.
Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives. Luke 21:37(NLT)
APOSTLE PAUL’S ADVICE
Paul never advised any believer to stand alone. Rather he encouraged believers not to forsake assembling together. He only asked believers to withdraw or stay away from teachers of false doctrines. And if Paul’s epistles are to be followed as the correct new testament doctrine, then, it’ll be ill-advised to encourage people to stop going to church.
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. Romans 16:17(ESV)
WHAT DOES CHURCH STAND FOR?
BODY OF CHRIST: Bible teaches that Church is the Body of Christ. Meaning EVERY BELIEVER is an embodiment of the Body of Jesus. We are all one in Him. We are one body with Him. Jesus is the head of that body. We may be of different members, but we are joined and connected to Christ to make the whole body. Even though individual member of that body may have different functions. Nevertheless, Jesus is the overseer and supreme Lord over all.
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.
1 Corinthians 12:27
ASSEMBLY OF BELIEVERS: Bible also teaches that Church is a CONGREGATION or ASSEMBLY of believers. Therefore, if there would not be need for churches, Apostle Paul wouldn’t have bothered to plant one. He literally planted churches in almost every place he had preached. Whilst he placed Elders/Bishop in those churches for them to continue exhorting, admonishing and teaching the brethren.
Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. Acts 14:23(NLT)
THE ROLE OF CHURCHES IS VITAL TO THE BODY OF CHRIST
Church is the pillar and the ground of truth. It is a place where BELIEVERS are to be fed and nurtured in the truth about God, Christ and the word of God. It is a place of spiritual growth and development. A place where believers are to be trained to discover their gifts and ministry. Where people that have been trained and attained spiritual maturity are being sent forth into the world to manifest their gifts and calling. Not necessarily to start a church but to advance the Kingdom of God in their spheres of life.
but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
1 Timothy 3:15 (NAS)
Although it may not be a sin not going to church. But not going would not be to anyone’s advantage. Rather it will alienate one from the benefits the community of believer’s proffer. The reason we go to church is not because God is keeping attendance and will only bless us if we go to church. We go to church to be around people who are going to build us up. If we are sitting at home doing something else, we aren’t going to hear the kinds of things we need to, and our hearts are going to slowly become hardened to the things of God.
But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end. Hebrews 3:13-14
Please never allow Satan or anyone else talk you out of going to church. Remember, Satan most dangerous weapon is deception. Church is the Body of Christ and Christ is the head of that body. By not going to church, you are invariably disconnecting yourself from His body where you are suppose to be nourished, nurtured to the level of maturity and as well use your talent and gift to bless others.
